Summer is Right Around the Corner!

Summer Camp registration for our 98th season has only been open for seven weeks, and some sessions are already beginning to fill! Time is running out to take advantage of our Early Bird Discount too. If your camper is registered AND your account is paid in full by March 1st, you will receive a 10% discount off of your camp registration fees. Many sessions still have space available, so make sure to take a look soon.

Camp Kirby is also searching for amazing candidates for both our CIT (Counselor-in-Training) program and our summer staff! Applications are now open for both of these and links can be found on our website, www.campkirby.org. Staff applications will be accepted until positions are filled. CIT applications must be completed by March 31st. We can’t wait to spend another summer exploring the tide flats, playing countless games, singing songs, and making memories to last a lifetime.

Board of Directors & Matching Grant Update

I’m taking this opportunity to express my gratitude to one of our hardest working groups of volunteers; The Camp Fire Samish Corporate Board of Directors. This fun (yes, really, we have fun!), intelligent, hard-working, and professional group of adults is responsible for financial oversight, the creation of policies to govern our growing council, for monitoring and prioritizing council goals and objectives, and raising funds. The Board assists in the creation of each yearly budget and the Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby strategic/ business plan. Thanks to the current fabulous team, we continue to thrive!

Each April at the Annual Meeting, we elect new members to the Board of Directors. If you are interested in donating your time, talents, and treasures, please contact me and I will submit your name to the nominating committee. We generally have ten meetings per year and expect that members attend our lead fundraising events.

Speaking of the Board, last November they offered a matching grant for monies raised through the 2019 No Show Ball and Giving Tuesday. The challenge: If we were able to raise a minimum of $15,000 by the end of the year, the board would release $15,000 as a match. And we made it! Thank you to all of the generous donors who raised $15,085 for Camp and for kids!!!

We look forward to another successful year and encourage you all to get involved!

Spring Break Exploration

Explore the wonders of the world with Camp Fire Samish! We are excited to offer our Exploration Spring Break Camp at both the Bellingham WoHeLo location, and at Camp Kirby. From April 6th through April 9th, youth spend the week off exploring and discovering the stunning landscape of Camp Kirby, or conducting your own unique science experiment in the Bellingham WoHeLo room. Youth learn about science and the environment, and of course, build new friendships. Activities include building rockets, making the perfect slime, themed activies, games, songs, and much more. All while gaining an understanding and appreciation for our ecosystem!

Thank You For Giving
The Gift of Candy!

Two of our Club Members in Whatcom county participated in a service project. They collected donations to give Camp Fire Candy to Veterans for Valentines Day. Together they raised $180 dollars and gifted 72 boxes of candy to veterans! Way to go Nova Powers and Ivy Lindsay!

Emma Funderberg also participated by handing out homemade Valentines to her local Firefighters. Thank you Emma!

This candy season Camp Fire Samish Clubs were able to donate nearly 200 boxes of candy to active military soldiers. Our donations were sent to the 1-303rd Cavalry Regiment, who are currently serving in Jordan. A big thank you to SFC Robert Decker with the WA National Guard for helping coordinate the transportation of this donation.

14th Annual Dinner and Auction

Adventure Awaits at the Swinomish Casino and Lodge as the Camp Fire Samish & Camp Kirby 14th Annual Dinner & Auction is right around the corner. This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the youth in our area by raising funds for new and exciting improvements at Camp Kirby.  Tickets are available through March 20th.

Absentee Bidding option offers Camp Kirby supporters who can’t make the event an opportunity to bid on any of the 250+ silent auction items, including original artwork, culinary and hospitality events, travel opportunities, local craft-brewed beverages, relaxing spa days, and more. The full auction catalog will be available to view soon!

All proceeds from this year’s Auction will be directly invested in Camp Kirby improvements and the Kate Scott Campership Fund. This year, Kirby will be doing a “Royal Flush” of Wazzu, where the bath house at Camp Kirby will experience a complete renovation from top to bottom. There will also be valuable upgrades made to the kitchen!

Meet Our Newest Staff Member

Olea was born and raised by artist parents in the Pacific Northwest. Growing up she was surrounded by nature, art and horses and grew into helping do the bookkeeping for the family jewelry business. That experience has led her many places from running a salon in Cary, NC, buying vintage clothes for a store in San Diego, to keeping the books for Camp Fire Samish! Olea believes that children can learn best through playing and having a safe ‘village’ to surround them. This gives them the spark they need to make them successful, happy people as they grow into adults. She is excited to help facilitate that kind of growth and development as she helps Camp Fire Samish.
